16 lakh ration Cards have to be renewed by the Himachal Government

The due date of about 16 lakh ration cards in the state is over, they need to be renewed. With the process of renewal of the total 16.31 lakh ration cards in the state yet to begin and depot holders declining to give subsidized food items to people on old cards, there is utter confusion with no word from the government on extending the deadline of June 30 with the process yet to take off.

It might take some time before the new ration cards are made but greater problem has arisen from the fact that depot holders selling subsidized good grains and other food items are not providing ration on the old cards.

Even though Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ramesh Dhawala said ration would be given on the old cards, it was the consumer who was facing the issue.  Though the department had thought that with one-time renewal date they would be able to detect the fake or double ration cards, they failed to put a proper mechanism in place which would to cause inconvenience to consumers.

Under the targeted Public Distribution System, 16,11,410 ration card holders being provided essential commodities at subsidized rate through a network of 4533 fair price shops.  All the 10,97,410 APL ration card holders being provided 18 kg wheat flour and 9 kg rice at a rate of  Rs 8.50 and Rs  10 per kg per month respectively
